At Humber Bay Compounding Pharmacy located in Toronto, Ontario, we are committed to crafting specialized medication plans that cater to individual patient requirements. A particular medication that we frequently work with is Naltrexone, especially in its low dose form (LDN). This drug, traditionally employed in the treatment of substance use disorders, is demonstrating potential in mental health treatment.
In low doses, about 10% or less than the usual dosage for treating opioid addiction (typically up to 5mg), Naltrexone presents some surprising traits, such as pain relief and anti-inflammatory properties. These specialized doses are prepared at our pharmacy and necessitate a doctor's prescription. Studies suggest that LDN can prove advantageous for individuals with conditions characterized by dysfunctional immune responses, including certain mental health disorders. Research has found that LDN might lessen mood fluctuations in people with bipolar disorder, likely due to its capacity to regulate endorphin levels which could impact both manic and depressive episodes. A 2006 study with 34 participants diagnosed with bipolar and substance use disorders observed an improvement in symptoms of both depression and mania after 16 weeks of Naltrexone use. Interestingly, Naltrexone did not seem to introduce any significant adverse effects. Those using LDN for long-term illnesses have reported betterment in accompanying mental health issues like low or depressed moods, fatigue, sleep troubles, and challenges in performing everyday tasks. Moreover, a self-regulated cohort study in 2021 recorded a 65% reduction in bipolar disorder diagnosis in participants who had been using Naltrexone to combat alcohol or opioid use disorder. LDN also shows potential in treating major depression. A small study conducted in 2017 revealed that when patients with recurring depression symptoms added a 1mg dose of Naltrexone to their treatment for 3 weeks, they noticed a considerable improvement. At Humber Bay Compounding Pharmacy, we prepare Naltrexone in different forms such as tablets, sublingual tablets, oral sublingual drops, oral suspensions, veggie capsules, topical creams, and ultra-low dose Naltrexone (ULDN). We meticulously produce LDN as an immediate-release capsule or tablet, excluding certain fillers and binders, to ensure the medication's effectiveness and safety. It's worth noting that even though Naltrexone displays encouraging outcomes in treating select mental health conditions, its use should always be overseen by a healthcare professional. Always consult your healthcare provider before initiating any new medication.
